Three ways to cruise a fjord
“Fjord cruise” covers very different trips. An ocean cruise is a voyage of several days on a large ship that calls at ports. An express boat is a passenger boat on a fixed route, such as Bergen to Flåm. A local ferry is a short crossing that also carries cars, such as Geiranger to Hellesylt. Rules, times and prices differ, so this guide names the type for every example.
Two things matter most for ocean cruises: the emission rules for the World Heritage fjords and the daily limits at the Bergen cruise port. There is no general ban on cruise ships from 2026.

Emission rules for the World Heritage fjords
Adopted by the Norwegian Maritime Authority on April 15, 2025.
| Ships | Requirement | From |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger ships under 10,000 GT | Zero emission | January 1, 2026 |
| Passenger ships of 10,000 GT and more | Zero emission | January 1, 2032 |
| All ships | Biogas is allowed as an alternative fuel | – |
| All ships | Shore power is mandatory where the facilities exist | – |
GT is gross tonnage, a measure of a ship’s size. The rules cover the World Heritage fjords, which are the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord. They do not automatically apply to the Sognefjord, the Hardangerfjord, the Lysefjord or every port in Norway, and the short announcement does not list every exception. Ask your cruise line how a particular ship meets the requirement.

Ports and local ferries
What is known for the main places on the route.
Bergen
The port allows at most 4 cruise ships and 8,000 cruise passengers a day, and its shore power can connect 3 ships at once. The cruise quays are Festningskaien, Bontelabo, Skolten North and South, and Jekteviken. The port requires shore power from 2026. Its English berth page says for all ships, while its Norwegian overview stresses the fourth call of the day, so ask the port if it matters for your ship. Calls are not limited to summer: the port’s call list includes a ship on November 2, 2026, and planned calls can change at short notice.
Day trips from Bergen →Geiranger and Hellesylt
The Geirangerfjord is one of the two World Heritage fjords. A local ferry links Geiranger and Hellesylt in 1 hour 5 minutes and carries vehicles. In October 2026 it leaves Geiranger at 10:30, 13:30 and 16:30 and Hellesylt at 09:00, 12:00 and 15:00. Book vehicle space ahead and arrive 30 minutes before departure.
The Geirangerfjord →Flåm
From Flåm the Flåm Railway climbs 20 km to Myrdal in about an hour, and the sightseeing boat runs through the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen in about 2 hours. Both run all year.
The Flåm Railway →Other ports
Geiranger, Hellesylt, Flåm, Eidfjord and Skjolden may have limits of their own. The Bergen figures do not carry over to them, so ask your cruise line or the port. The Nordfjord villages Stryn, Loen and Olden have a separate guide at Stryn, and voyages along the coast further north are covered by Northern Norway.
Which months suit your trip
No agency ranks cruise months. This table follows the opening seasons.
| If you want | Months | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hikes such as Trolltunga or Preikestolen | June to September | Experienced hikers can walk Trolltunga without a guide from June 1 to September 30, and June to September is the main season at Preikestolen. |
| Orchard blossom in Hardanger | Mostly mid-May to mid-June | It depends on spring temperatures and can start in April in a warm year. Fresh fruit comes in late summer and autumn. |
| Rail and fjord boats | All year | The Flåm Railway, the Nærøyfjord boat and the Mostraumen cruise run all year, with winter timetables. |
| Mountain roads such as Dalsnibba | Usually mid-May to September or October | Weather decides. On October 4, 2026 the operator reported a weather closure. |
| An ocean cruise call in Bergen | Not only summer | The port list includes a planned call on November 2, 2026. |

Smaller boats instead of a liner
Express boats and sightseeing boats are separate trips with their own tickets.
Bergen to Flåm express boat
The trip takes 5.5 hours each way and runs from April 1 to October 31, with a daily departure from Bergen at 08:00 and from Flåm at 15:30. It carries no cars, and stops include Balestrand and Vik. If you break the journey overnight you need separate bookings for each leg.
The Sognefjord →Flåm to Gudvangen sightseeing boat
Two of the operator’s boats are fully electric and one is a hybrid. The operator reserves the right to swap vessels for weather, capacity or maintenance, so the boat type is not guaranteed. A third boat is due to become fully electric during 2026.
The Nærøyfjord →Mostraumen from Bergen
A round trip of 3 to 3.5 hours with no landing, year round. Weather or ice can change the route.
Fjord day trips from Bergen →Norwegian fjords cruises: frequently asked questions
Are cruise ships banned in the Norwegian fjords in 2026?
No. From January 1, 2026 a zero-emission requirement applies in the World Heritage fjords to passenger ships under 10,000 GT. Larger ships follow on January 1, 2032. Biogas is allowed as an alternative fuel.
Which fjords does the emission rule cover?
The World Heritage fjords, the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord. The announcement does not automatically extend to the Sognefjord, the Hardangerfjord, the Lysefjord or every port.
How many cruise ships can Bergen take a day?
At most 4 ships and 8,000 cruise passengers a day, according to the port. That is a Bergen limit, not a limit for all fjord ports.
Is the cruise season only in summer?
Not in Bergen. The port’s call list includes a planned call on November 2, 2026. Planned calls can change at short notice, so check with your cruise line.
Is the boat from Bergen to Flåm a cruise?
It is an express boat on a fixed route. It takes 5.5 hours each way, runs from April 1 to October 31 and carries no cars. An ocean cruise or a local ferry works differently.
What does a cruise cost?
Cabin, gratuity and excursion costs depend on a specific offer from the cruise line, so this page lists none. Local boats and trains are priced separately and are described on their own pages.
