The Nærøyfjord at a glance
The Nærøyfjord is one of two fjords in the UNESCO World Heritage Site West Norwegian Fjords, inscribed in 2005. The other is the Geirangerfjord. The usual way to see it is the fjord cruise between Flåm and Gudvangen. The ship first sails through the Aurlandsfjord and then into the Nærøyfjord.
The trip takes about 2 hours one way and can start in either village. The operator sells it all year. The timetable changes with the season, and the winter schedule is listed below.

Winter timetable
Valid from 16 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. The operator can change it.
| Direction | Departs | Arrives |
|---|---|---|
| Flåm to Gudvangen | 09:30, 14:45 | 11:30, 16:45 |
| Gudvangen to Flåm | 12:00, 17:15 | 14:00, 19:15 |
Stops at Aurland, Undredal, Dyrdal and Styvi must be booked before the ship leaves its home port. Without a booking the ship does not stop. In winter, bad weather can force the ship to turn back to Flåm instead of continuing to Gudvangen. A shuttle bus covers the way back, so choose a return time that fits.

Ships, rules and combinations
What to know before you board and what you can add.
Electric ships
According to the operator, Future of The Fjords and Legacy of The Fjords are fully electric, and Vision of The Fjords is a hybrid. Spring of The Fjords is meant to become fully electric during 2026, but no conversion date is given. The operator can swap ships for weather, capacity or maintenance, so the product name does not guarantee an electric ship. Replacement ships can be less accessible.
Rules in the protected area
The park administration allows drones in the Nærøyfjord area, except in Bleia to Storebotnen, and general aviation rules still apply. E-bikes count as motorized traffic off the road and need a special permit. World Heritage status alone does not ban drones everywhere.
Railway and fjord in one day
A package in Flåm combines the Flåm Railway with the fjord cruise. It takes about 6 hours: 2 hours on the ship, a 20 minute shuttle and about 2 hours 10 minutes on the train back, plus waiting. This does not include getting to Flåm from Bergen.
Choosing the direction
Because the trip starts in either village, pick the end that fits your onward route. Flåm connects to the Flåm Railway and the express boat from Bergen. Gudvangen connects to the bus toward Voss. If you only sail one way, plan the shuttle bus back separately, since the return leg is not part of the ship ticket. Winter weather can also change the plan, so keep some margin on the day.
From Bergen
A loop from Bergen takes the train to Myrdal, the Flåm Railway to Flåm, the ship to Gudvangen, a bus to Voss and the train back. See Norway in a Nutshell. The Mostraumen cruise from Bergen goes through the Osterfjord and is not a trip to the Nærøyfjord, see day trips from Bergen.
Beyond the Nærøyfjord
The ship passes the Aurlandsfjord before it reaches the Nærøyfjord, and the Aurlandsfjord belongs to the larger Sognefjord system. The cruise from Bergen to Flåm on the Sognefjord is a separate trip. If you go on to the Nordfjord, Stryn covers the villages and the glacier valleys.

Nærøyfjord: frequently asked questions
How long is the Nærøyfjord cruise?
About 2 hours one way between Flåm and Gudvangen. You can start in either village, and the operator sells the trip all year.
What does the winter timetable look like?
From 16 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 the ship leaves Flåm at 09:30 and 14:45 and Gudvangen at 12:00 and 17:15. It can change, and bad weather may turn the ship back to Flåm.
Do I need to book the stops?
Yes. Aurland, Undredal, Dyrdal and Styvi must be booked before the ship leaves its home port. Without a booking the ship does not stop there.
Will I sail on an electric ship?

Can I fly a drone in the Nærøyfjord?
The park administration allows drones in the area, except in Bleia to Storebotnen, and general aviation rules and respect for people and nature apply. E-bikes need a special permit.
Is the Mostraumen cruise the same as the Nærøyfjord?
No. The Mostraumen cruise from Bergen sails through the Osterfjord and Mostraumen. See day trips from Bergen for what that trip costs and when it runs.
